I would like to address absences with all of you. Right now we are experiencing students out sick quite a bit. I am attaching to this informative letter how we address absences at school. It will address what to do when a student is out sick, excessive absences, 90% rule etc. Let me tell you that in dealing with absences there sometimes seems to be a mystery on how things are addressed. First and foremost, if a child is running a fever keep them home until they are fever free for 24 hours. If they are experiencing other symptoms, like throwing up and other issues, keep them home until they are symptom free. If you take them to a doctor please get documentation that you took them and turn that in when they return. A phone call is always appreciated from a parent when a student is going to be out. If they are going to be out for an extended time please let us know. With all of that being said, the state of Texas, does have some rules and regulations in regards to absences. The most obvious law I have to address as the principal is the 90% rule of attendance. A student has to be in attendance 90% of the time. For simplicity that usually means a student can not have no more than 18 absences in a school year. That seems like a great deal of absences but they can add up pretty quick. For those students who have accrued double digit absences as of this date, I will be sending out a letter. If you receive a letter please do not hesitate to contact me so we can address any issues. For those students who fall into the category of being over the 90% attendance rate threshold I will address that with the student and the parent and take ALL things into consideration. Again if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. https://5il.co/cqs6
